Iceland is the first European country to control the coronavirus

Moments that make us more hopeful with the end of the pandemic. The Icelandic government celebrated the control of coronavirus cases in the country and authorized the reopening of part of the trade.

Iceland has always been an example. During the pandemic, there were only 29 deaths. Today there is only 1 patient hospitalized with Covid-19 and with no deterioration in the health condition.

How did they do it? With planning, support the population and quick action against the disease. A team was organized to work on coronavirus cases even before the first contagion was identified in the country.

The entire population was tested and positive cases were isolated in a hotel in the city. After the airport reopened, visitors arriving in the country were also quarantined and tested.

Bet on science

Thorolfur Gudnason, Iceland's chief epidemiologist, says that the openness given to scientists was also essential for control. “I had been preparing for this pandemic for 15 years”, says Thorolfur.

At every step, Iceland was guided by science, spearheaded by Thorolfur and his team. Politicians did not even participate in the daily newsletters related to the pandemic.

In Reykjavik, the capital of the country, is the headquarters of one of the main genetics companies in the world, deCODE Genetics. The company provided state-of-the-art laboratories to monitor covid-19 cases.

Kari Stefansson, president of the organization, says that the company's participation is essential at this moment and, therefore, made a point of giving up the laboratories.

Since then, the team has sequenced all positive covid cases to understand how the virus was spreading and mutating. As the virus mutates every four transmissions, in 25% of cases they are able to identify which patient has infected whom.

Now the country wants to maintain control of the disease until the end of the pandemic in other countries.

As Iceland often receives tourists, it is not yet possible to open all bars and restaurants because it would hinder the control of parties and contamination.
